History of the Ikhlamur Pavilion

This historic site used to be a recreation area. The Fulya stream flowed through it, overgrown with plane trees and lindens. The first part of the valley, where the pavilions are located, belonged to Haji Hussein Agha for a long time. However, after some time this place was included in the state treasury and turned into a private sultan’s garden. In the second part, rising to Yildiz, Sultan III. Selim and Sultan II. Mahmud held shooting competitions. The distances and dates of the shots fired by the sultans are written here on stones filled with water. During the reign of Sultan Abdulmecid, a third part of the valley was created and this part was planted with trees. Sultan Abdulmecid later built two pavilions on this site between 1849 and 1855.

During the reign of Sultan Abdulaziz, wrestling fights and various entertainments were held in this garden. In subsequent years, this place becomes a place where sultans and their families come to visit and relax. This pavilion was given to the Istanbul Municipality by the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 1951. In 1985, these pavilions were opened to visitors as a museum-palace.

Architecture of the Ikhlamur pavilion

Linden Pavilion

The vestibule of the Merasim mansion and the rooms on both sides of the hall attract attention. The staircase on the front facade is made in the Baroque style. In addition, the reliefs, very interesting, make the appearance of the mansion unique. In the interior of the pavilion, one can see Western decorations used in Ottoman palaces in the 19th century. In addition, a one-story rectangular pavilion on a high basement was built of hewn stone.

On the other hand, Mayet’s mansion is a much simpler structure. This two-story building has a gable staircase at the entrance. In the middle of the entrance there is a hall and stairs. There are also four rooms in the corners.
